Repatriation of mortal remains to Italy

For information on the documentation required to ship human and cremated remains to Italy please consult the link SCIV16 on the Forms and useful links section of the website.
Documents are to be submitted by mail to the offices of the Consulate General. Payment for the sum of the consular fees relative to article: 66H, 5a, 70a (see the current Table of Consular Fees) is required in cash or money order payable to the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver. Email (consolato.vancouver@esteri.it) for specific questions not addressed in the SCIV16 file.

Please be advised that our Consulate General cannot request authorization from Italy until all the required documents have been received. The authorization request can take from 7 to 10 business days.
Flight arrangements should be made only after authorization has been granted by the authorities in Italy.

Upon authorization the Consulate General will issue the certification required for travel (passaporto mortuario) and will contact the applicant to arrange for pick-up (or mailing at the applicant’s expense). The Consular certification must accompany the shipping container and must be available for presentation upon request during the trip to Italy.

It is illegal in Italy to scatter ashes without formal authorization from the local city hall. Authorization and regulations to scatter ashes are obtained from the Town hall (Comune) in Italy.
