ITALIANS RESIDING IN CANADA
Italian citizens permanently residing abroad may request the aid of their local Italian Consulate in times of hardship.
Italian citizens intending to move back to Italy, should contact the Italian Consulate for assistance before leaving.
Please note that, in order to be entitled to any one of the services herein described, it is necessary to be an Italian citizen, hold a valid Italian passport, and be a permanent resident of the host country (i.e. “Landed Immigrant” in Canada). These services may only be requested from the Italian Consulate where one resides.

ASSISTANCE TO ITALIANS TRAVELLING ABROAD
The Consulate offers assistance to Italian citizens travelling abroad who encounter unforeseen difficulties:
– Loss of passport, theft of documents and/or money
– Hospitalization
– Assistance in case of arrest.
ASSISTANCE SERVICES TO ITALIANS PERMANENTLY RESIDING IN CANADA
PERMANENT REPATRIATION
Italian citizens who have resided abroad for work reasons and decide to return to Italy permanently, are entitled to certain benefits to help with their families’ transition. The Consulate can provide information in this regard. It is advisable to contact the Social Assistance Office at the Consulate at least a month prior to departure for an appointment. The following documents will be required:
– Self-certification form ASSI04, duly filled out and signed
– Valid Italian passport. Canadian citizens who have reacquired Italian citizenship, may exhibit their valid Canadian passport together with a certificate of Italian citizenship issued by the Consulate.
– “Landed Immigrant ” document, if he/she is not a Canadian citizen. Those who no longer have this document must request a duplicate from the Canadian authorities: Citizenship & Immigration Canada .
– ID documents for every member of the family moving back to Italy. A further requirement is that each member of the family must be registered with the Italian Municipality (see “Vital Records”). Male Italian citizens between the ages of 17 and 45 must also verify whether their military position has been settled ( see “Military Office”).
– List of personal belongings, written up in Italian, specifying the quantity and value of the items. This list must be signed by the applicant in front of a consular employee. Personal belongings are considered duty-free if the person has resided abroad for at least twelve months. This also applies to spouses of Italian citizens residing in Italy who move there within six months of their wedding date.
Upon arriving in Italy, the person must:
– Establish residency in the municipality of choice;
– Sign in with the local Health Unit in order to obtain medical coverage;
– Submit application to the Regional authorities for any benefits, refunds or subsidies for which he/she may qualify.

IMPORTATION OF A VEHICLE TO ITALY
Used vehicles may be imported to Italy.
Citizens who are repatriating pay no duty on their vehicle, because it is included with their personal belongings. The only requisite is that they must have owned the vehicle for at least six months.
The following documents are required when importing a vehicle:
– Ownership;
– V.I.N. (Vehicle Identity Number) to be requested from the local Transportation Authorities: in B.C.: ICBC & Ministry of Transportation ; in Yukon Motor Vehicles;
– Technical specifications drawn up by the manufacturer or an authorised dealer, on official letterhead, duly signed and stamped. The signature must be legalised by a Notary Public whose signature must in turn be legalised by the Consulate.
All documents must be brought to the Consulate already translated into Italian. Consular fees apply with respect to the validation of the signatures and of the translations.

ASSISTANCE TO ITALIAN CITIZENS TRAVELLING ABROAD
LOSS OF PASSPORT, THEFT OF DOCUMENTS AND/OR MONEY
An Italian citizen travelling abroad who loses his/her passport, may apply for a travel document to the Italian Consulate . Said document has a limited validity allowing only for the return trip back to Italy. In order to obtain a travel document the applicant must attend in person at the Consulate and submit a copy of the police statement reporting the loss of the passport, two photographs (passport size) and if possible, some other ID document. For information about obtaining a new passport while travelling abroad please see “Passports – Non-resident citizens”.
Italian citizens whose money or personal belongings are stolen while travelling abroad, may apply to the Consulate for a loan, which is to be fully reimbursed to the Italian government. The loan may or may not be extended depending on the Consulate’s evaluation of the circumstances.
HOSPITALIZATION
Italian citizens temporarily visiting Canada are not automatically covered for medical expenses. It is advisable to contact the local health unit (Azienda Unita’ Sanitaria Locale) for information before leaving.
