Launch of the “Italian Museums” App

The Italian Ministry of Culture recently launched the first version of “Italian Museums,” an App that provides users with information on cultural venues in the national museum system and allows the purchase of admission tickets.

The App shares information in English and Italian on 406 Italian museums and archaeological parks, geo-localizing their location with respect to the visitor and giving access to a digital ticketing platform, without intermediary costs, built for those museums that until now did not offer such a service.

Available free of charge on major platforms, the tool has been piloted over the past year on a growing number of museums, starting with the launch of ticketing for entry to the Pantheon and to date has been used to issue over 3 million tickets.

It will gradually be extended to all state-owned public museums and made available for places of culture administered by local authorities, universities, dioceses or privately owned, with the goal of making it the preferred portal for access to the network of nearly 4,900 Italian museums.

New features, such as suggested itineraries, audio- and video-guide services, and versions in other languages, are also being developed to improve the visitor experience and promote accessibility of cultural venues.

The launch of the App is a significant step in the process of digital transition of Italian museums financed by the PNRR and has among its goals to bring the public, particularly foreign audiences, closer to the lesser-known cultural sites of the nation’s “diffuse heritage,” promoting their enhancement and diversification of tourist flows.
