Overview
Following the permanent closure of the Italian Cultural Institute in Vancouver (September, 2014), a Cultural Office has been established within the Consulate General, operating in close collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto.
In concert with the Embassy of Italy in Ottawa and with a view to strengthening cultural exchanges between Italy and Canada, the Cultural Office promotes the Italian language and culture in Vancouver and throughout the jurisdiction of the Consulate General (the Provinces of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory).
As of December, 2019, the Cultural Attache’ position has been vacant.
PROMOTING ITALIAN CULTURE
In close collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto, the Cultural Office organizes and presents events such as exhibitions, recitals, conferences or screenings in all domains of the arts and sciences. In order to better respond to the diverse interests of the local society, the Office avails itself of a network of contacts with local academic institutions and cultural organizations, as well as with all the major international festivals of Western Canada.
As concerns the promotion of the Italian language, the Cultural Office, in collaboration with the Education Office, promotes the strengthening of the teaching of Italian in public and private schools in western Canada.
Finally, the Cultural Office is also in charge of the Consulate’s library loan service. (see below).

LIBRARY LOANS
Overview
The Consulate General of Italy has a library consisting in over 1,700 books and 530 DVDs, available for loan to Italian citizens as well as the public at large. While most of these titles are in Italian, there are sections with books in English and DVDs with English subtitles. Borrowing
Titles may be borrowed by filling out this loan request form, indicating their name, date of birth, the desired titles and the date when they intend to pick them up. Pick-up is possible during the Consulate’s regular opening hours or, exceptionally, at other times, upon appointment with the relevant staff, by writing to the Cultural Office (cultural.vancouver@esteri.it).
Books and DVDs can be borrowed free of charge, by filling out the form, signing a copy of the Regulations (on the back of the request form) and showing a valid photo ID.
The Consulate General should be promptly informed of any change of address, including e-mail, of users who wish to borrow books or other material.
All materials in the library can be borrowed, with the exception of: dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference books; magazines and journals; rare books or books in poor conditions.
In particular circumstances, the Consulate General may decide to temporarily restrict the list of books and other materials available for borrowing.

Loan periods
Books
Up to 3 items at any one time, for a maximum period of one month, renewable for one more month (renewal requests must be submitted before the original due date)
DVDs
Up to 3 items at any one time, for a maximum period of one week. No renewals allowed.
Fines
The fine for overdue materials is $1.00 per item per day. Lost or damaged material is charged to the user at the replacement cost established by the Consulate General.

– Wed: 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Please note:
* Normally, books cannot be consulted within the premises of the Consulate General. Exceptions for valid reasons can be accommodated on a per-case basis.
* Loaning borrowed books to third parties is strictly forbidden.
* Users must not damage books and other materials by scratching, underlining, staining or writing on them.
