Law No. 26 of February 28, 2026 converted Decree-Law No. 200 of December 31, 2025 into law and, among other provisions, extended the deadline established by Article 1, paragraph 1-ter, of Decree-Law No. 36 of March 28, 2025.
The deadline to submit the declaration has been extended to May 31, 2029 (from May 31, 2026).
Individuals who had not yet turned 18 as of May 24, 2025, and who are children of citizens by birth meeting the conditions set out in letters a), a-bis), and b) of Article 3-bis of Law No. 91/1992, may acquire citizenship by benefit of law by signing the required declaration no later than May 31, 2029.
