In accordance with Italian Law No. 11 of January 19, 2026, Italian nationals registered with the AIRE (Registry of Italian nationals residing abroad) will be able to apply for an electronic identity card (CIE) at Italian Municipalities.
Pursuant to Article 5 of Law 11/2026, as of June 1, 2026, Italian citizens registered with the Registry of Italian national Residing Abroad (AIRE) will be able to apply for an electronic identity card at any Italian municipality.
The identity card will be delivered using the same procedures as for applications submitted through the consular office, with the interested party having the option to collect it in person at the municipality or, alternatively, request that it be shipped abroad.
