About the Book
Castaways and Other Writings, 1996–2024 brings together nearly three decades of work shaped by a life lived across borders. Through poetry and prose, Bastianutti reflects on a journey marked by displacement and resilience—from his childhood as a refugee from Fiume (today Rijeka), through postwar Italy, immigration to the United States, and ultimately a creative and academic life in Canada.
Rooted in memory yet animated by imagination, these writings explore themes of exile, diaspora, war, identity, creativity, and the enduring search for belonging. The collection offers readers an intimate portrait of one individual’s lived experience while also speaking to broader diasporic histories that continue to resonate today.
About the Author
Diego Bastianutti is an award-winning poet, writer, artist, and educator whose work bridges personal history and collective memory. His multidisciplinary practice reflects a lifelong engagement with language, culture, and the arts, and his writing is recognized for its emotional depth, clarity, and human insight.
Event Details
The evening will feature a presentation by the author, offering insight into the creation of the book and the experiences that shaped it. The book launch is presented by Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver.
