Message of Condolences from the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella

The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has sent to His Majesty King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the following message:

On the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, I extend to Your Majesty, to the Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom the deepest sympathy of the Italian Republic and my own personal condolences.

A figure of extraordinary importance enters history.

Her authoritative wisdom and unequalled sense of responsibility will be remembered, as expressed notably through the generosity with which The Queen dedicated her long life to the service of the British people and to the wider family of the Commonwealth.

For seven decades she was a symbol of dedication for millions of women and men, maintaining a vision of the future and of the needs of the times she lived through.

The Italian people and their institutional representatives who had the honour of meeting Queen Elizabeth II were able to admire her extraordinary stature and unparalleled personality.

While sharing the profound sorrow of the Royal Family and of the United Kingdom, I renew the deepest condolences of Italy and I express my fervent good wishes for the beginning of Your Majesty’s reign.

Sergio Mattarella
