Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) – new requirements and submitting procedure.

Starting from December 21th, 2020 both requirements and procedures for submitting applications for recognition of Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) have changed.

You can apply only if you are:

  • a Canadian citizen permanent resident of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Yukon;
  • a non-Canadian citizen in possession of a valid Permanent Resident Card and permanent resident of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

Applications for recognition of Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) are no longer accepted by mail and are to be submitted in person.
Permanent residents of British Columbia and the Yukon must book an appointment to submit in person the application in Vancouver through the online booking system (click here).
Permanent residents of Alberta and Saskatchewan must book an appointment to submit in person the application in Edmonton by sending an e-mail to edmonton.vancouver@esteri.it.
If the documentation presented at the time of the appointment is incomplete, the application will not be accepted and the applicant will be required to book a new appointment.
Applications submitted by mail will be rejected and documents returned at the applicants’ expense.
